Nayika Brijlal teaches Kathak at FITPOD, sharing its graceful intricacies.

Nateshwar Dance Studio Ballito instructor Nayika Brijlal teaches Kathak (North Indian classical dance) at FITPOD weekly. She shares some interesting facts about this intricate and graceful style of dancing.

  • Kathak classes are not only about memorizing choreography. The art form has a comprehensive approach to learning that includes understanding the cultural, historical, and musical context, ensuring students develop a deep appreciation and understanding of Kathak.
  • Although Kathak is a traditional and classical form of Indian dancing, you don’t have to be religious or Indian to do it. It is also not only for women. Historically, Kathak was performed by both men and women.
  • While Kathak’s roots lie in storytelling and devotional performances in temples, it has evolved into a dynamic art form with broad appeal. Because it is such a versatile form of dance, it has moved beyond traditional stages into mainstream cinema, like Bollywood.
  • Every class started with a short warm-up, followed by 25 to 30 minutes of Kathak training. This is the more disciplined part of the class and includes theory. After that, it’s time for more relaxed and fun Bollywood-style dancing where everyone gets to ‘let loose’ and enjoy their favourite songs (while still learning, of course).
