Things you need to know about becoming a dancer

FITPOD dancing instructor Catherine Barry of Swish Studios loves sharing her passion and guiding young dancers towards their dreams. She shares a few important things that she feels every dancer should know…

  • You won’t become a dancer in a day, a week or even a year. It takes many years and a lot of dedication, patience and commitment to become a dancer.
  • If you are serious about your dancing, make sure you attend every single class. Consistency is key (even during exams or holidays).
  • There are many benefits of dancing, including fitness, confidence and discipline. It’s also a wonderful creative outlet.
  • You will make amazing, lifelong friends through dancing. Your fellow dancers become your extended family.
  • A lot of dancers are high achievers in other areas of their lives as a result of some of the skills they’ve learned from dancing, such as commitment, consistency and time management.
  • Ballet is the best discipline for core strength, and it forms the basis of all other dance styles.
  • The relationship you have with your dancing instructor matters. Find someone your child connects with and who is invested in their growth and reaching their potential.
  • Find an accredited, qualified teacher to avoid injuries and learning things the wrong way. Be selective about who you choose and feel free to ask for credentials.
