Luelle Roberts

Medical doctor, specialist anaesthetist and Pilates instructor Luelle Roberts believes that any holistic fitness regime should include movement like Pilates.

“The overall mobility and flexibility created through the strength and stability of Pilates is fundamental in preserving the body’s mechanical longevity,” she says.

A true local, Luelle was born and bred on the North Coast and has been practicing Pilates for more than 16 years. Having always been fascinated by human anatomy and physiology, she followed in her General Practitioner father’s footsteps and studied medicine at UCT after school. She then went on to study a further four years to become a specialist anaesthetist.

After living in Johannesburg for a period, Luelle, her husband Brian and their two children returned to Ballito in 2009 and she worked as an anaesthetist at Umhlanga Hospital for 10 years. It was during lockdown that Luelle became fascinated with the power and overall health benefits of Pilates. “I was doing up to three online classes a day and decided to do an instructor’s course to improve my understanding and skills.”

After completing an intense year-long, US-based online BASI Pilates mat course, Luelle did a comprehensive BASI equipment teacher training certificate with highly qualified Ballito trainer, Tash Barnard. “I didn’t want to teach initially, but I really fell in love with Pilates and felt a pull to share my knowledge. I also needed to be more available and present for my children,” says Luelle. “The scientific methodology of the BASI method appeals to me as a medical professional. I truly cannot emphasise enough how beneficial Pilates is – both for longevity and as a complimentary exercise for other sports.”

Luelle offers two mat classes a week as well as one-on-one and duo equipment classes at the Pilates Pod at FITPOD. She loves the professional, welcoming environment at the FITPOD Studios. “It really is the most magical and serene space with beautiful décor, calming lighting and incredible, state-of-the-art BASI SYSTEMS equipment.”

Luelle has clients in various age groups, including some in their sixties, seventies and even eighties. “The BASI method allows you to work your entire body in a one-hour session and the benefits are endless.”
