When Cathy first started dancing at the age of five, she could never have guessed that one day, after a lifetime of dancing on stages all over the world, she would be standing in front of a group of little dancers, helping them make their dreams come true, too.
SWISH Studios founder Cathy was born and grew up in Durban. After school she completed a secretarial course before going to dance professionally on cruise ships and on stages across Europe, Australia, Japan and the Caribbean.
Now semi-retired from the stage, Cathy is proficient in a number of different dancing styles and passionate about sharing her skills and expertise with her students at FITPOD.
She teaches children from the age of 3 years upwards and offers ballet, modern, contemporary jazz, acrobatics and tap dancing. Her dancers participate in both national and international competitions and do annual shows.
As co-owner of One Step Productions, which she runs with her husband Alan, Cathy uses her choreography skills to create magnificent stage productions. She has produced sell-out shows at The Pumpkin Theatre in Ballito and her productions will soon be featured at the Rhumbelow Theatre in Durban as well.
Cathy explains, “I created the production company so that my dancers would be able to grow into the company and earn a living as dancers if that’s what they want to do. Theatre dancing has become very athletic and competitive, so it’s important that dancers are trained in a number of different styles.”
Cathy also sponsors classes for underprivileged children, who wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to these types of activities. “Dancing makes me happy,” she says. “When you find something that you love, you should follow your dream and share that love and passion wherever possible.”
